This is whip #29, an 8′ 8″ ft nylon bullwhip with a purpleheart handle. It has an English eye fall hitch, 3 bellies, a twisted, tapered core, 30″ twisted, tapered fall and a cracker made of Brownell Fast Flight Plus Bow String. The wooden handle is epoxied to a 6″ long 1/4″ diameter steel rod that the thong is braided upon.
Here’s the core and the steel rod part of the handle. It has been bound with closed loop binding.
1st belly done, 4 ft long, 8 plait, bound and rolled.
The 12 plait second belly
14 plait third belly.
The 20 plait overlay starts at the tip with a 3 plait English eye fall hitch that evolves into a 6 plait U1O2/U2O1,
and ends at the transition in a 20 plait gaucho pattern
After epoxying the handle onto the steel rod a transition knot is tied-in this case it is a Double Gaucho Knot of Two Passes, plate 167 in Bruce Grant’s Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding.
The whip was then waxed. Here’s the finished whip.
